Sofal Privacy Policy

Sofal is a pottery studio tracking app for saving information about pieces, clay bodies, glazes, photos, notes, and firing history.

Data you add to Sofal

Sofal can store pottery records you create, including piece labels, notes, tags, clay and glaze details, weights, dimensions, firing notes, OCR text, photos, generated cutouts, and 3D scan files you choose to create.

On-device storage and iCloud

Sofal stores app data on your device using the app database. If iCloud is available for the app, Sofal can sync your records through your private iCloud database so they are available across your Apple devices. This is Apple iCloud storage, not a Sofal developer-operated server. Apple’s iCloud terms and privacy practices apply to iCloud storage.

Camera, photos, microphone, and speech recognition

Sofal asks for camera and photo-library access so you can photograph or import pieces, glaze labels, and clay bags. Sofal asks for microphone and speech-recognition access so you can dictate studio notes. Apple’s system services may process speech recognition depending on device and OS capabilities.

On-device analysis

Sofal uses Apple on-device frameworks for OCR, image analysis, foreground cutouts, color matching, dictation, and 3D capture when those features are available. Local analysis is used to suggest piece stages, shapes, colors, tags, clay/glaze matches, and material details. Sofal does not send this local analysis to a Sofal developer server.

Optional online AI research

Online AI research is disabled by default. If you enable it in Settings, save your own provider API key, and tap Research Online for a selected material, Sofal sends a request from your device to the provider you selected. Supported providers are OpenAI, Anthropic, Gemini, and OpenRouter.

That request can include OCR text recognized from the selected glaze or clay label, the selected label image resized and compressed as a JPEG before sending, a prompt asking the provider to research pottery material metadata, the model name, and your provider API key needed to make the request.

The provider may use web search, depending on the provider and model. The provider returns suggested material metadata and source URLs, which Sofal saves only in your app database and, if enabled, your private iCloud database. Provider terms and privacy policies apply to those requests.

Provider API keys are stored in the device Keychain. Sofal does not sync those keys through Sofal’s app database.

Developer-operated services

Sofal currently does not operate developer-run accounts, analytics, advertising, tracking, or backend storage services. Sofal does not receive your pottery records, photos, 3D scans, notes, API keys, or usage analytics.

Tracking and advertising

Sofal does not include third-party advertising SDKs and does not track you across apps or websites owned by other companies.

Data deletion

You can delete records inside Sofal. You can also delete the app from your device. If iCloud sync is enabled, deleting synced data may affect all devices signed in to the same iCloud account.
